The City of Sarnia, known also as Ontario’s incredible Blue Water Country, is situated on the Lake Huron’s south shore, just across the St. Clair River from Eastern Michigan. The City of Sarnia is ready to offer its citizens a perfect blend of ease of transportation and small town friendliness with large city amenities. The city is very proud of its past, feeling happy with its present, and anticipating its future. In the beginning of the nineteenth century, the first settlers came to the area to establish a community. The settlement was initially called “The Rapids” and was renamed by Sir John Colborne Port Sarnia back in 1836.

Then the community grew over the years, and in 1856, Port Sarnia turned into the Town of Sarnia, and later gained a city status in 1914. Finally, two decades ago, the Town of Clearwater (ex-Township of Sarnia) and the City of Sarnia merged to create the city existing today. This new community accounts for a population of 70,000 people and occupies 44,000 acres of land. Sarnia has been originally growing thanks to the wealth of adjoining stands of timber, coupled with the discovery of oil in the area and the advent of The Great Western Railway and the Grand Trunk Railway. Initially, they were these rail lines that linked the city directly to the US through a rail tunnel, opened under the St. Clair River in the end of the nineteenth century.

Later, in 1938, a convenient link for vehicular traffic appeared with the opening of BlueWater Bridge. During the 1920s the City of Sarnia became a well-known deep water port. That was the time when the major part of today’s shipping facilities was built, including the large grain elevators, the winter harbour, and the elevator slip. The Sarnia area has seen a petroleum industry since the early nineteenth century, but the foundation of the Polymer Corporation, manufacturing synthetic rubber, in 1940s, made the City of Sarnia a large petrochemical centre, too. Today Sarnia represents a municipality of around 70,000 people, known for its excellent waterfront parks and breathtaking sky blue water. Despite of the city’s size, Sarnia can offer big city amenities to its guests.
